Chesterfield, NJ – Parallax Modern, a dynamic new contemporary art gallery, has opened its doors in Chesterfield, New Jersey, offering a unique perspective on modern art. Located conveniently between the bustling art scenes of New York City and Philadelphia, Parallax Modern is dedicated to showcasing the exceptional talent of the Tri-state area in a renovated warehouse that was once a sign shop. For those of you that couldn’t make it to the opening, the public is invited to join the gallery’s closing reception featuring acclaimed Philadelphia artist David Tothero on September 28th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM to celebrate its successful inaugural exhibit.
The showcase, titled “David Tothero, Sculpture and Drawings” unveiled his abstract welded steel sculptures which have a strong graphic presence that were informed by his previous career as a graphic designer. Also on display will be his expressively fluent and personal drawings, that offer a different perspective. David has had his work exhibited at prestigious institutions like the Woodmere Art Museum, the Michener Museum, and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. Beyond exhibitions, his monumental sculptures have found permanent homes in public spaces such as Friends of Palumbo Park in Philadelphia and the Ironstone Sculpture Garden in Alloway, NJ.
David was born and raised in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. After graduating from the York Academy of Art, a school based on the principals of the Bauhaus, he moved to Philadelphia and began a career in graphic design. A sculptor friend taught David how to weld and let him use his studio and tools in exchange for taking care of his property while he was away traveling. That was the start of working in steel, creating large welded sculptures, and the beginning of a new creative direction. David sees a direct connection in his metal sculptures to the transformation of letter forms and shapes used in the graphic design process. To quote the innovative and influential sculptor David Smith – “sometimes when I start a sculpture, I begin with only a realized part, the rest is travel to be unfolded, much in the order of a dream”.
The name “Parallax” reflects the gallery’s commitment to presenting art that challenges perceptions and invites viewers to see the world from different angles. In scientific terms, parallax refers to the perceived change in position of an object seen from two different places. Similarly, Parallax Modern aims to shift perspectives and foster artistic dialogue by connecting artists with audiences in an intimate and engaging environment.
