Arts News Now recently asked local artist Jane Zamost to share an artist statement regarding her latest exhibition, “Escapades of My Mind. Zamost, known for her reflective engagement with the healing power of art, she shared her experiences and insights on the experience and working with the health organization and arts supporter, Capital Health.

“I’m very grateful to Capital Health for bringing me back to this special space, a place where all emotions are safe — from the frustration and sadness associated with the challenges of illness and injury to the exhilaration of a healthy outcome and the miracle of birth.

I’ve enjoyed more than a decade here where I’ve seen the beauty and potential of the healing arts. It’s here where visitors, patients, and professionals alike can have a respite from the complexities associated with being a human being. I love this gallery’s ability to give people just what they need.

And so, I thought quite a bit about the pieces of my work to bring to this show – artworks that would evoke a wide range of feelings and ones that express with you mine. I’ve brought my lefty series as I thought it was imperative to illustrate how the making of art helped heal me when I was down and out. And then you’ll view ‘make ‘em laugh,’ every time I see this piece my dad appears before me with his twinkling eyes and love of the circus. I wanted you to see the many faces that speak to me in my unconscious and land on my canvas when in my flow. And I hoped to reveal feelings about home, my happy, safety net, as well as my love for nature. Color and movement are essential to my artistry as is my joy in giving myself full permission to be in the moment and of the moment.

I tell students that the creative process is the gift – it’s like the fun associated with playing a game or taking a nature walk. If you like or love the outcome, that’s your added bonus. And that is what I’ve presented here, ‘Escapades of My Mind’ is a compilation of my gifts.

As Jackson Pollock so deftly wrote, ‘I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them. It doesn’t matter how the paint is put on, as long as something is said.’

Thank you for joining me — I am most appreciative.”

“Escapades of My Mind,” is on view through August 26th at the Hopewell NJ campus. Her works continue to inspire and heal, reflecting the profound connection between art and well-being.
