New Hope, PA – With its enduring theme of “Photography as Art,” the 31st annual celebration of photography and photographers at Phillips’ Mill will open on March 31 this year. As in 2023, the Photo Committee will hold not only a three-week juried exhibition but also a weeklong committee members’ show, meaning that photography aficionados will have the opportunity to view twice as many works as in the past.

For the 2024 exhibition, the juror is Thom Goertel, a distinguished fine-art and documentary photographer who has worked everywhere from the White House to Iceland to Kenya, and more. His oeuvre can be seen at https://thomgoertel.com.

This year, 257 photographers from thirteen states–as far away as Colorado and California– submitted 1,023 images to the juried show. There will be an accepted artists’ reception on March 30th, at which awards will be announced, and the juried show will open to the public on March 31st, running through April 19th. Attendees can expect to see a wide range of different types of photographic subject matter, techniques, processes, and styles, all at a very high level of artistic quality.

On April 21st, the Photo Committee’s own “Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Photo Show” will open and will be on view until April 28th. This exhibit will include a special “Backwall” section in which photographers respond to a self-portrait assignment, with commentary about their own images.

For both exhibitions, a donation of $5.00 will be requested at the door, and all works will be available for purchase, as well as Phillips’ Mill Photo logo items.

Putting on two ambitious exhibitions is a complex and labor-intensive task, but under the new leadership of Maria Dreyer, the thirty-plus members of the Photo Committee are eager to rise to the challenge. Some are experienced veterans who bring institutional knowledge and continuity to the job and some are relative newcomers who bring fresh enthusiasm and energy. The operation is a complex one, including: producing and publicizing a call for art; processing submissions and working with the juror; notifying entrants of results; receiving, curating, hanging, and labeling the photos; creating a printed program; holding a reception; managing sales; and recruiting and training volunteers to staff the shows.

But, as one committee member says, “We are a group of very different people brought together by a common bond: the love of photography. It’s a pleasure to discover and to share with others works representing the art that means so much to us.”
