NEWSROOM POST: PLANO, ILLINOIS

This world premiere production runs June 2 through June 21, 2026, at Bay Street Theater

Plano, IL  — Edith Farnsworth House and Gallery is pleased to present en caminos, a new exhibition by  Chicago-based artist and designer Noel Mercado, and the 2026 Artist in Residence for the historic site. The  exhibition is now open and may be viewed through June 14 with the purchase of Edith Farnsworth House tour  tickets or grounds passes, available on the museum’s website: www.edithfarnsworthhouse.org.

Created in direct response to the historic interior of the Farnsworth House, en caminos introduces a new body  of work that repurposes and reimagines select furniture originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.  Mercado replaces the original upholstery with textiles and leather brought from his family’s home state of  Jalisco, Mexico—materials that include tablecloths, repurposed bags, belts, and leather remnants shaped by  longstanding traditions of domestic making and repair.

These objects carry generational knowledge formed through labor, migration, and resourcefulness—forms of  expertise often overlooked in canonical histories of modernist design. By inserting these transformed works  into the interior of the Farnsworth House, Mercado brings his own lineage and the histories that inform it into  conversation with the site, expanding its narrative to include rich cultural stories that have long existed in  parallel with modernism.

Curated in collaboration with Alivé Piliado, the exhibition continues in the Gallery, where visitors encounter  Mercado’s methods, processes, and original furniture designs. This presentation traces his approach to  material translation and highlights how his practice moves fluidly between sourcing, reworking, and precise  handcraft. Through subtle yet intentional interventions, Mercado redirects attention toward cultural identity,  migration, and authorship, allowing inherited forms of knowledge to sit visibly within a space historically defined  by architectural purity and restraint. en caminos offers a thoughtful reflection on identity and design,  demonstrating how contemporary practice can engage with modernism while reshaping its narrative from within.
