Philadelphia's Fall for the Arts Festival brings 300+ artists, live music, family activities and shopping to Germantown Avenue, continuing Chestnut Hill's century-long connection to the arts.

Philadelphia, PA — For more than a century, art has had a home in Chestnut Hill, from its historic institutions and theaters to galleries and creative businesses lining Germantown Avenue. On September 27, that longstanding artistic tradition will be on full display as the 42nd annual Fall for the Arts Festival returns, bringing more than 300 artists and vendors to the heart of the neighborhood for one of its largest celebrations.
Taking place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Fall for the Arts festival transforms Germantown Avenue into an open-air arts destination featuring paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, woodwork, and handcrafted pieces by artists from across the region. The free, family-friendly event also features live music and entertainment, artist demonstrations, interactive workshops, and opportunities to explore the galleries, shops, restaurants, and businesses that make Chestnut Hill a year-round destination.
Today, Woodmere occupies two historic 19th-century stone mansions across 10 acres and is dedicated to the art and artists of Philadelphia. Its collection encompasses more than 11,000 works and offers a sweeping view of the region’s artistic history. At the same time, its accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums places Woodmere among approximately 3% of museums nationwide that hold the distinction. Woodmere’s newest chapter began in 2025 with the opening of Frances M. Maguire Hall for Art & Education, which expanded the museum to include 14 galleries, a children’s art and education studio, and new public spaces.

Over the years, Chestnut Hill’s artistic footprint has expanded well beyond the museum, with a variety of galleries and creative institutions establishing themselves throughout the neighborhood. Today, NoName Gallery, Gallery on the Avenue, The Little Gallery, Borrelli’s Chestnut Hill Gallery, and Gravers Lane Gallery are among the spaces that carry that artistic tradition forward and showcase the work of local, regional, and national artists. Beyond its galleries, Chestnut Hill celebrates its longstanding connection to the arts each month through Arts & Eats First Fridays. Held on the first Friday of each month, Arts & Eats reinforces Chestnut Hill’s identity as a destination for the arts by transforming Germantown Avenue into an evening-long celebration of creativity and culture. Galleries welcome guests after hours with new exhibitions and installations, while demonstrations, lectures, and live music offer additional ways to discover and engage with the arts. Restaurants and retailers also take part, creating an experience that connects Chestnut Hill’s artistic community with the shopping and dining that define the Avenue.
Together, these longstanding institutions, contemporary galleries, and year-round arts programming have made the arts an enduring part of the Chestnut Hill experience: a legacy the Fall for the Arts Festival carries forward each year.
