Gary Giordano: Painting, the Journey through Physical and Metaphysical Places

By Artist Contributor, Gary Giordano

In a self-guided interview with Bucks County Painter Gary Giordano, the local artist shares his medium, narrative, and creative struggles

Why did you choose painting?

I’m not sure, but there is something in me that is attracted to thick gummy material on a surface. I
have been doing this since kindergarten when I wanted to make rubber by rubbing a black crayon over and over again on paper until the wax was so thick it appeared like rubber. I like playing in the mud texture of heavy paint.

What do you struggle with?

Being more loose and letting go. Once while working on a series of ten paintings, I arrived at a point where I stopped worrying and thinking. This allowed me to merge into the process and it just flowed. I always try to get to that. You know like the Guston thing, where he said, the third hand comes out of your body and the painting paints itself.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a series which deal with stigma associated with addiction and mental illness. For this I have revisited using the figure in my work.

And what are you reading lately?

I’m currently reading The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin.

What does painting mean to you?

Painting is a journey. Sometimes this journey is deep within us and sometimes it is an external journey into physical and metaphysical places. The result becomes something to be shared with the viewer. Something a viewer can experience. We discover perspectives, feelings and emotions all wanting to be expressed. The creative practice and medium are used to share this. My journey has led me to realize that I need to be completely present when I am painting. When I am totally in the moment I am connected to the universe. This is a space where source energy speaks to me. I use gestures, high key colors, rhythm, line, and textures to express and capture this energy.
