NEWSROOM POST: NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Omeed's Tapestries, a New Play by New Feathers Playwright Barry M. Putt, Jr., will be presented by the Midtown International Theatre Festival in July 2026.

New York, NY – The Midtown International Theatre Festival will present Omeed’s Tapestries, a new play by New Feathers playwright Barry M. Putt, Jr., in July 2026.

The story follows an Iranian shopkeeper and his partner as they plan to flee their homeland to live openly as a same-sex couple. When a devout neighbor uncovers their secret, he threatens to destroy their lives. Inspired by over three dozen firsthand accounts, interviews, and extensive research, the play explores the danger—and resilience—of LGBTQ lives in Iran.

Omeed’s Tapestries has already received meaningful recognition and support. Jay Michaels Global Communications, LLC produced an industry reading in November 2024 in NYC, directed by Robert Liebowitz. Jane Clementi of the Tyler Clementi Foundation—a global advocate against LGBTQ bullying—delivered the opening remarks. Singers Colton Ford and Garek donated performances of their music in support of the play’s message, and singer David Archuleta has expressed strong interest in the story. The play was a finalist for both the Woodward International Playwriting Prize and the Off-West End Arcola Theatre’s International Queer Theatre Reading Series.

Barry M. Putt, Jr. is an accomplished writer and lecturer. His plays have been produced across the U.S. and in France, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. He has written more than 50 audio drama scripts and authored three books on dramatic storytelling and film/TV history. Barry has presented at numerous conferences, including the National Dramatists Guild Conference, the Write Stuff Writers Conference, and BCC’s Aspiring Writers Conference.

This story is both urgent and vital. Iranian LGBTQ individuals face severe persecution, and their voices are rarely heard on global stages. Omeed’s Tapestries sheds light on their courage and struggles, fostering empathy and awareness where it is most needed. The Midtown International Theatre Festival’s commitment to diverse, socially impactful works—and its vibrant New York audience—make it the ideal venue to amplify these voices.

The production is currently in the investor phase. Weft and Word Ventures is accepting tax-deductible contributions of any size through its fiscal sponsorship with Fractured Atlas.

Following the festival, Weft and Word Ventures will pursue an Off-Off-Broadway production, with eventual plans for an Off-Broadway run.
