New Hope, PA – This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in New Hope will feature a dynamic combination of history, music, and community engagement. Scheduled for Monday, January 20th, from 9 AM to 1 PM, the event invites individuals and families to take part in enriching programs and service activities.
A key highlight of the day is a presentation by Patricia L. Mervine, M.A., a local historian and author renowned for her work on the Bucks County Underground Railroad. Drawing from her book, Slavery, Friends, and Freedom in Bucks County, Mervine will share compelling stories of freedom seekers, abolitionists, and local residents who played critical roles in the region’s fight against slavery. Her presentation will delve into daring escapes, African American settlements, and the historical ripple effects that continue to shape the community.
Equally captivating is the participation of CW Allen, a hip-hop artist, speaker, and author whose work combines music and social commentary. Originally from Cleveland, Allen has performed across the country in schools, conferences, and other venues, blending his gospel-centered worldview with the transformative power of hip-hop. Attendees can expect an inspiring keynote address and musical performance from Allen, whose message resonates with audiences of all ages.
Additional activities include a free breakfast, an educational wealth gap simulator, and several hands-on service projects in collaboration with local organizations such as Fisherman’s Mark, Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, Project Linus, and World Vision. Students have the opportunity to earn community service hours, and families are encouraged to participate together.
