Submissions Open for Eighth Annual Juried Emerging Playwright Competition

Submissions for the eighth annual juried Emerging Playwright Competition are open now and close midnight August 10, 2025

New Hope, PA – The popular competition at Phillips’ Mill encourages new work for the stage and rewards the winning playwrights who live within a radius of one hundred miles of New Hope with a public reading of their plays by actors on the historic Mill stage on November 22 and a cash prize of $100.00.  Both budding playwrights and seasoned playwrights with a new short play to introduce are encouraged to submit.  To be eligible, the short plays  must never have been  performed in a public venue, limited  only to table reads and workshops.  Submissions are open now through midnight on August 10th, 2025.  See the Phillips’ Mill Community Association’s website for the prospectus containing the rules of the blind competition www.phillipsmill.org/drama/emerging-playwright-competition-prospectus

From its inception, the Emerging Playwright Competition has been a favorite among artists, bringing original, one-act works to the historic stage at Phillips’ Mill in a late fall treat for the entire community. The first 50 entries submitted are considered for the competition. A nonrefundable fee of $10 per script is required for entry. Each of the plays selected for the staged reading will receive a cash prize of $100.  Selected plays will be announced on the Phillips’ Mill website during the week of October 5. 

Always an enlightening evening, the Emerging Playwright Competition Staged Readings shine a light on local playwrights and offer the community an opportunity to enjoy a thought-provoking night out and support area artists. Since 1929 Phillips’ Mill has served as a meeting place for artists to collaborate and create meaningful works to share with each other and the community. Nestled along the Delaware River just north of New Hope, the historic grist mill provides a charming backdrop to appreciate an inspiring night of drama in Bucks County.
