Ten Years of Threads: The Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild's Journey Through Fabric and History, on view from July 11 through August 8 in the Taplin Gallery.

Princeton, NJ The Arts Council of Princeton (ACP) is pleased to present Ten Years of Threads: The Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild’s Journey Through Fabric and History, on view from July 11 through August 8 in the Taplin Gallery.

Celebrating a decade of artistry, cultural preservation, and community building, this exhibition showcases the work of the Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild, an organization dedicated to honoring and advancing the rich traditions of African American quilting through contemporary design and storytelling. Founded in 2016, the guild has grown from a small gathering of quilting enthusiasts into a vibrant community of artists united by the philosophy, “Each One, Teach One.” Guild members represent a range of quilting styles and experience levels, creating work that honors tradition while embracing contemporary approaches to textile art.

Through an array of quilts and textile works, Ten Years of Threads traces the guild’s evolution over the past decade while highlighting the historical, cultural, and personal narratives stitched into each piece. Visitors will experience works that blend modern quilting techniques with African and diasporic fabrics, celebrating heritage, creativity, and the enduring power of storytelling through cloth.

The name “Sankofa” comes from the Akan people of Ghana and reflects the principle of looking to the past to inform the future. This philosophy is woven throughout the guild’s work, which preserves traditions while embracing contemporary artistic expression.

Over the last ten years, the Princeton Sankofa Stitchers have become recognized not only for their artistry but also for their commitment to education, philanthropy, and community engagement. Members regularly participate in workshops, exhibitions, and service projects that support local organizations while fostering connections through the shared practice of quilting.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 3-5pm, providing an opportunity for visitors to meet guild members and learn more about the stories, techniques, and traditions represented throughout the exhibition. On Saturday, July 25, from 1-3pm, the public is invited to attend a gallery talk, followed by a Make + Take Card-Making Workshop for elementary-aged children and their guardians to enjoy together.

The exhibition, opening reception, gallery talk, and the Make + Take Workshop are all free and open to the public – no registration required.
