Janet Filomeno’s lifelong interest in water greatly informs her work. When creating her large-scale gestural paintings, the artist re-enacts the movement of water through the pouring, flinging, and throwing of acrylic paint onto a stretched canvas on the floor. In her As the Sea Rises-Blue Crystals Revisited series, brilliant blue paint streaks across each canvas, creating dynamic, abstracted compositions that visualize troubled waters. The red boxes and lines, which recall graphics used by cable news programs, conveys the artist’s profound concern for our current political environment and the rapid acceleration of climate change.
