Cooperstown, NY – Marina Pires is currently playing Dot in the Glimmerglass Festival‘s production of Sunday in the Park with George, running now through August 17th in Cooperstown, NY. This celebrated musical by Stephen Sondheim explores the complexities of art, love, and the passage of time, centered around the iconic painter Georges Seurat and his muse, Dot. Pires is opposite John Riddle (Frozen, Titanique) who plays George. The show is directed by Ethan Heard who is the co-artistic director of the Signature Theater in DC.
Heard explains “I’ve had Marina in mind to play Dot/Marie for years now. She is
the real deal: magnetic, moving, and completely original. Her Dot is deliciously mischievous,
and her Marie is poignantly profound. I could not be more thrilled for audiences to experience
her sublime performance.”
“Dot is the role of a lifetime, and I am honored to take on this character,” said Pires, who tattooed Sondheim’s iconic hat on her arm when he passed away.
Pires goes on to say, “This process has brought me a lot of peace around how I want to make art in this industry. It feels completely unlike an eight-show week—time stops. I keep calling it Sondheim Summer Camp because thanks to the kinds of rooms Ethan creates, we just get to play really big and make mischief. This process has clarified and strengthened my resolve to work in more culturally dynamic, creative spaces that allow our collective passions and reverence to infuse the piece with love.”
