NEWSROOM POST: FLEMINGTON, NEW JERSEY

On Sunday, June 14 starting at 3:30pm, step into the tavern for The Crossing: A Revolutionary New Musical

Flemington, NJThe revolution wasn’t just fought on battlefields, but lived in barns, taverns, and town greens by everyday people. Come celebrate their stories at the Stomp & Sow Community Barn Dance on Stangl Road, marking 250 years of the United States.

On Sunday, June 14 starting at 3:30pm, step into the tavern for The Crossing: A Revolutionary New Musical, an intimate performance that amplifies the voices history often leaves out, including Flemington’s own Jacob Francis, a freed Black man who served in the Continental Army. Local author Larry Kidder follows with remarks on Jacob Francis’s extraordinary story.

Jugtown Mountain String Band and Caller Sue Dupre will then take the floor for two rounds of live square dancing. No experience is needed, just a willingness to move. Between sets, grab a bite from Viva Mexico’s Food Truck and browse the seed share to take something home and watch it grow (don’t forget to bring seeds from your garden to swap!).

“We are excited to get the community together for some fun while also instilling some curiosity about the lesser known stories of our collective history and what we can create together for the future,” says Nicole Maniez, DIY volunteer and event organizer. “We will need creativity, compromise and a deep belief in our shared humanity for a more beautiful future to be possible.”

Flemington DIY’s Print Club will be hosting a screen printing station where participants can press their own bandana inspired by revolutionary ideals. There will also be a seed exchange and food available from Viva Mexico’s food truck.

Come dance, create, plant, and keep imagining how revolutionary ideals become lived experience in our communities. The event is free and runs from 3:30-7pm, immediately after the Hunterdon County Parade Celebrating 250 Years of America’s Independence. More info can be found at flemingtondiy.org/barn-dance
