Buckingham, PA – The Oriental Publishing Center co., Ltd. Shanghai, China has accepted Steven Miller’s museum studies textbook The Anatomy of a Museum: an Insider’s Text, for publication this year.  The author received notification from editors of the original English language edition (2018, Wiley/Blackwell) which continues to sell well.  Miller, a native of Pennsylvania, is a resident of Buckingham.  Retired from museum employment he continues writing in the field and serving as a board member for two area organizations.

The Anatomy of a Museum is based on Miller’s required course by the same name, taught at the Seton Hall University MA Program in Museum Professions, South Orange, NJ.  Miller was an adjunct professor with the program for sixteen years. Previously he taught museum studies at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, New York University, NY, NY, The New School for Social Research, NY, NY, and Columbia University, NY, NY. In addition to the Anatomy text he is the author of four books for the museum field.  All remain in print.   This is Miller’s first non-English edition.

The Anatomy of a Museum presents chapters discussing the diverse operating aspects of museums including media relations, acquisitions, exhibitions, trusteeship, curation, security, education, finances, administration, fundraising, conservation, maintenance, collection management, and architecture.  Each chapter concludes with practical questions Miller asked his classes about the subjects discussed.  The scope and depth of the content is realistic as presented by an experienced museum professional.  This perspective has set the book as a sought-after model in the field.  There is no equivalent text for the subject of museum studies.

Miller holds a BA in sculpture (with honors) from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, and, an international graduate certificate in the principles of conservation science from the International Centre for the Study of the Conservation and Preservation of Cultural Property, Rome, Italy. During his nearly sixty years in the museum field he has served as a museum curator, director, trustee, and writer.  Upon retirement Miller has devoted his work on additional writing for the museum field and two books are in the pipeline.  He and his wife Jane live in Buckingham, Bucks Co., PA.

Regarding the Chinese edition of The Anatomy of a Museum Miller stated: “I am delighted to have my work available to colleagues and audiences in a nation so enthusiastically growing its museums.  The Seton Hall program has launched so many of our current museum leaders.  How thrilling to have it recognized in this manner.”  Further information may be sought at sh.miller2@verizon.net.
