Philadelphia, PA — This is not your grandmother’s book club! Book Club: Plot Twist Pending is taking on the classic works of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Agatha Christie in this highly irreverent, completely improvised show. Join the authors and their characters in their struggles to create works of staggering genius. This limited-engagement is brought to you by CSz Philadelphia: Home of ComedySportz, Philadelphia’s longest-running comedy show, and is running as part of the 2026 Philadelphia Fringe Festival.
A cast of talented comedy improvisers enter the worlds of Shakespeare, Dickens and Christie, improvising new stories in the styles of each author. Every audience will get a one of a kind event! “The performers are so good at these three very different styles, and their references and witticisms are so quick.” says director Sarah LeClair.
“Brian McCann, known to Philly audiences for playing William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, plays all three authors,” explains LeClair. For each of the three authors, McCann will get suggestions from the audience that will kick off each story, “he has a chance to grab inspiration from the audience and craft the story, while also throwing curveballs to the performers.”
Turning the work of three authors not typically known for comedy into laughs comes from the “delightful silliness of characters in disguise, or very campy villains, or murder in the most bizarre and improbable locations. And, of course, a lot of the wrenches and zaniness comes from the audience suggestions we get,” explains LeClair. Part of the challenge for the performers is switching these styles rapidly, and creating three original plots. No one knows where the show will go, making Book Club: Plot Twist Pending a great show for lovers of books, comedy, or something unlike anything else in the Fringe.
